“Why should I listen to you about Landlord-ing?”

April 21, 2012

By El Dueño

Who I am?

You can call me “El Dueño,” Spanish for “The Owner” or in this case “The Landlord.” I’m a real estate investor in my mid-20s in the DC-MD-VA metro area. In late 2011, I bought my first property and in early 2012 I became a Landlord.

Why you should listen to me

For the past 4 years, I’ve counted down the days until I could become a Landlord. I’ve read my fair share of real estate books (I’ll give a reading list in a future article) and watched much more HGTV than guys my age probably should.

As a neophyte landlord and investor, I’m at the beginning of my journey. I read a lot of personal finance blogs every day, but haven’t been able to find too many good blogs about being a landlord (with the exception of BiggerPockets.com, my favorite).

What I will offer you is the perspective of a brand new landlord. I’ll share the challenges that I face each day, the things that work well for me and all of the mistakes I make along the way! Hopefully, after reading a few articles on this blog you will be convinced that buying, holding, and renting properties is one of the best paths to financial freedom and wealth. I hope you find “Landlord Street” useful, and I look forward to learning from the readers as well.

Disclaimer: I’m not Robert Kiyosaki, Donald Trump, Scott McGillivray, Gary Eldred or any other famous property investor. I don’t have years of experience, best selling books, or millions of dollars… yet! I definitely don’t have a golden ticket to get rich quick. All the advice and stories here are real and based off my personal experience or the experiences of other investors close to me. Please take everything I say here with a grain of salt, and don’t hesitate to share your opinions and successes in the comments!
